A message from Chargé d’Affaires Steve Walker:

On behalf of the U.S. Embassy Asmara, I would like to wish the people of Eritrea my best regards and congratulations on the occasion of the commemoration of the Start of the Armed Struggle. When Hamid Idris Awate and his comrades fired the first shots in what was to become the Battle of Adal on September 1, 1961, the outcome of the Eritrean people’s fight for freedom and dignity was far from clear. Over the course of the next 30 years, the Eritrean people fought and sacrificed and persevered despite overwhelming odds and with very few allies. The coming to power of the Derg regime in Ethiopia in 1974 raised the level of cruelty and violence to unprecedentedly bloody levels. Despite this, the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front bravely continued the struggle.

In 1991, thanks to the Eritrean people’s courageous determination, Eritrea became an independent country. This important day – which marks and celebrates the Commemoration of the Start of the Armed Struggle – provides Eritreans as well as others, like myself, who admire this magnificent achievement, the opportunity to reflect on how hard-won and long-fought that struggle was.
